In 1964, under the warm Modenese sun, the first Maserati 3.5 Mistral Spider rolled out of the factory. Its sleek lines, penned by Pietro Frua, caught the light in a way that made it seem alive—low, elegant, and purposeful. The world was changing fast: jet travel was becoming accessible, music was growing louder, and Italian design was at its zenith. The Mistral Spider was Maserati’s answer to that new world—a grand tourer with soul. Beneath its long bonnet lay a 3.5-liter straight-six derived from Maserati’s racing pedigree, the same bloodline that had once carried Juan Manuel Fangio to victory. Only a handful would ever be built—around 125, each hand-finished, each subtly unique. Gianni Bellini, a wealthy textile merchant from Milan, was among the first to place an order. For him, it wasn’t about status but freedom. That summer, he drove the Mistral Spider from the cobblestone streets of his city to the lavender fields of Provence, the top down, the air alive with promise. Wherever he went, the car turned heads—not through brashness, but by its understated mastery.
